Foie gras is an exceptional delicacy, prized at the end of the year or for special occasions. However, the question of preservation frequently comes up: how long can foie gras be preserved before being eaten? To guarantee its quality and taste, it is essential to observe certain storage rules. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your foie gras.
Preserving Foie Gras: the different types
There are several ways to store foie gras, depending on its preparation. Each of these variants has its own particularities in terms of shelf life.
- Foie Gras in jars or cans : These formats have the advantage of being able to be kept longer thanks to their sterilization process. As a general rule, canned or jarred foie gras can be stored for several months, or even a year. As long as it is stored in a cool, dark place. It is also advisable to respect the best-before date indicated on the label. This precaution guarantees the best taste quality.
- Fresh or semi-cooked foie gras : If you’ve opted for fresh or semi-cooked foie gras, the shelf life will be shorter. Fresh foie gras can be stored in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. For semi-cooked foie gras, storage time varies from 1 to 2 weeks, depending on storage conditions. It is essential to wrap these products in plastic film or airtight bags. This treatment avoids any risk of contamination and preserves their aromas.
